Tosan O. Boyo is President of the East Bay Market at Sutter Health - Leading the 6 Hospitals, 15 Ambulatory Centers, 4 Surgery Centers and 9,000 staff and physicians that care for 500,000 patients across Alameda, Contra Costa and Solano Counties. Tosan is an elected Board Member for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement - Serving as Governance Chair. For decades, IHI has spearheaded best practices to advance high-quality outcomes and zero harm across the world.

Tosan recently served as Senior Vice President of Hospital Operations at John Muir Health which ranked Top 10 hospitals in California according to US News and World Report. In this role, Tosan led continuous improvement across Walnut Creek Medical Center, Concord Medical Center and JMH Behavioral Health Center. During his tenure, Tosan received the Regent’s Award for Executive of the Year by the California Association of Healthcare Leaders.

Tosan previously served as the Chief Operating Officer of San Francisco General Hospital; the City’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, Psychiatric Emergency Center and largest Primary Care Center. During his tenure Tosan received the Best Initiative award from the Disparities Solution Center for developing an enterprise-wide strategy to improve equitable health outcomes. At the height of the pandemic, he was appointed by the Director of Public Health to serve as the Chief of Operations for the City’s COVID-19 Command Center. Of the most densely populated cities in the US, San Francisco achieved the lowest death rates. The City’s Health Commission honored him with a Resolution for his service.

Prior to SFGH, Tosan led the Ambulatory Network of San Mateo Medical Center transforming Primary Care, Specialty Care, Dental Care and Managed Care across the County. Under his leadership, California Association of Public Hospitals bestowed SMMC the Performance Excellence Award in Ambulatory Services.

Tosan is a Board-Certified Fellow in Healthcare Management and was the first graduate of Montclair’s Master of Public Health Program. Born in Nigeria, raised in Jersey then backpacking across all seven continents, shaped his views on how intersections across economics, culture and health policy impact vulnerable communities. Tosan believes access to affordable high-quality care is a cornerstone of a thriving society and he’s on a life-long mission to eliminate disparities.
